Do you have to pay for replacement retainers?
Retainers can either be removable or fixed. Under the NHS, your orthodontist is responsible for your care for 12 months after usual treatment ends. After this period, you'll have to pay privately for continuing care, repeated treatment, and any replacement or repair of retainers.
However, replacements for damaged or lost retainers are usually paid for out of pocket, so it's still good to get a rough idea of what retainers cost in order to make the right financial decision for your family. Typically, retainers can cost anywhere from $250 to $600 per set without insurance.
Give Your Orthodontist a Call
If you've looked for a few hours and still can't find your retainer then you'll need to contact your orthodontist to get a new one. They'll make an appointment with you to either make a new mold of your teeth or to order a copy of your old ones if they still have your impression.
The answer is yes; you can get a new retainer from a different orthodontist. The new orthodontist will likely want you to come in person for an evaluation before making your new retainer. First, you'll need to fill out paperwork, talk about your teeth, and discuss the type of retainer replacement you need.
Are retainers covered? Typically, one set of post-treatment retainers (for orthodontic purposes) is covered in a lifetime. If your plan covers two-phase orthodontic treatment, retainers are usually covered after each phase.
Do Orthodontist Keep Retainer Molds? In the case of removable retainers, patients can call their orthodontist and ask that a new one be made, as all good orthodontist will keep patients molds over the period of treatment, something that can not always be said for online providers.

Your teeth begin to shift if you don't wear retainers at night every day. If you go a week without wearing retainers, you may notice a small amount of relapse, small spaces, or rotations. If you go a month without wearing retainers, it's possible your bite may begin to change.

If your orthodontist can't repair your broken retainer, your best option is to get a new retainer made as soon as possible. If you need to set up a payment plan to pay for the process and the new retainer, talk to your orthodontist.

Is it OK to wear a broken retainer?
If there is only a small crack, you may be able to continue using your removable retainer in the meantime, until you are able to procure a replacement. However, if the cracks are severe or the retainer is broken in half, you will no longer be able to continue using it.
The cost of replacement retainers will depend on the type of retainer you get and whether you get it in-office or online. Invisalign retainers can cost anywhere from $400 to $1,000. Essix retainers generally cost between $50 and $200, and Hawley replacement retainers cost between $150 and $300 to replace.

In short, the answer depends on the type of retainer you have. Bonded retainers, which are bonded to the back of your teeth, can last three years or more. Conversely, removable alternatives have a shorter lifespan and typically last anywhere from six months to a few years.
