A Very Berry Banana Smoothie (1)

It has been feeling like summertime lately and I don’t know about you, but I always gravitate towards lighter foods as the temperatures get warmer. We have made different versions of this smoothie over the years, but this is my favorite smoothie recipe. A classic medley of flavors, strawberry, blueberry, and ripe banana, blended up with Greek yogurt and a splash of milk. So refreshing and good for you too! A great healthier alternative to ice cream. This is an easy recipe that your family will love during the summer! Let’s make A Very Berry Banana Smoothie!

The Banana

A Very Berry Banana Smoothie (2)

This recipe calls for two bananas. And guess what? The overripe and past their prime bananas are perfect for this! So now you have more than just banana bread that you can use your ripe bananas for! We like to use fresh banana and haven’t tried frozen banana in these smoothies. (I’m sure you probably could though.) Just take the two bananas, peel them, and put them in the bottom of your blender. We have found it works best to put them on the bottom versus the frozen fruit on the bottom. It blends up so much nicer if the blender doesn’t have to start with the frozen fruit. We used to use one banana, but the extra banana adds some natural sweetness and makes it that much better.

The Yogurt

A Very Berry Banana Smoothie (3)

Here is where the only added sugar comes in for this smoothie. We like to use Chobani Greek vanilla yogurt. This allows for a little extra sweetness but not so much that it takes away from the health benefits. If you aren’t worried about a little sweeter smoothie than you can go ahead and use plain Greek yogurt. Using plain yogurt is even better for you because plain yogurt has less sugar. If you like regular yogurt better than Greek that should work also! Sometimes we will end up using flavored yogurt if we don’t have any vanilla on hand. It works well and doesn’t really change the flavor of the smoothie!

The Berries

A Very Berry Banana Smoothie (5)

We like to use frozen strawberries and blueberries for this smoothie. One of the reasons we like to use frozen is to add thickness and a cooler temperature to it. Also, it eliminates the need to blend up ice cubes which really is no fun! I feel the frozen fruit helps it have the perfect consistency without watering it down. If you want to make smoothies in the most economical way, then go ahead and buy the big bag of frozen fruit at the grocery store. This in the long run is typically cheaper. You could probably use fresh fruit if you wanted but the texture will probably be a fair amount different.

The Milk

We use whole regular milk and just a splash of it. You can really use any milk you would like but we use whole because that is what we have on hand. The milk adds even more nutrients but also is a great way to help blend it up smoothly and like the yogurt makes it a creamy smoothie. Delicious!

Other fruit combinations to try:

  • Blueberry Banana Smoothie – Just add more blueberry and omit the strawberry!
  • Banana Strawberry Smoothie – Just add more strawberries and omit the blueberries!
  • Use the same recipe but add some frozen spinach into the blender, Now you have some vegetable too!
  • Frozen Mango and Pineapple
  • Frozen Peach and Blueberry
  • Frozen Cherry and Raspberry

Ways to enjoy your Berry Banana Smoothie:

As an easy breakfast:

  • With a boiled egg for a quick and healthy breakfast on the go!
  • As a sweet treat after a long day outside in the sun. Refreshing and the best way to cool down!
  • In the tractor during planting season on a hot day. I like to put the Yeti mug my husband has in the freezer before taking it to him so that it stays even colder.

It really doesn’t matter what time of day you make this smoothie; it is great just about any time. One of the reasons this is my personal favorite, when it comes to smoothies, is because it is made with simple ingredients and real fruits. A lot of times the smoothies you get at coffee shops and other places like that are not made with real fruit. I usually will ask before I order one so I can get that extra benefit of real fruit.

A Very Berry Banana Smoothie (14)

The Blender

You will want a high-powered blender. This makes it so much easier to blend up preventing it from getting hung up on the frozen fruit. The one that we got for our wedding is the one that we use, and it does the job well. It isn’t a Vitamix but none the less does a great job without the super expensive price tag.
